Environmental Tip

Gas prices have come down, but that doesn't mean it's time to stop driving efficiently.  Below are some tips to conserve fuel.

  • Checking spark plugs, oxygen sensors, air filters, hoses and belts are a few examples of maintenance that can save a vehicle owner up to 165 gallons of gas per year—for a potential savings of about $415 a year (based on 12,000 miles of driving per year and $2.50 a gallon for gas).

  • Generally, each 5 mph over 60 mph you go is like paying an extra 20 cents per gallon of gas.

  • Aggressive driving, such as mashing down the accelerator or the brake, uses an extra 125 gallons a year on average, so by driving gently you can save $315 a year at today’s prices.

  • An idling car gets zero miles to the gallon and contributes to global warming pollution. Contrary to popular belief, restarting your car does not burn more fuel than leaving it idling. Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more gas and emits more global warming pollution than restarting your car.

Digital TV Conversion

Millions of $40 government-issued coupons are available to help citizens purchase a converter box for their older television sets that might not work after the switch from analog to digital broadcasting.  Viewers who have satellite or cable service will not need a box, but viewers who rely on antennas, for example, will need to purchase a converter box before February 18, 2009.  To request a coupon, visit www.dtv2009.gov or contact the 24-hour hotline at 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).
